Health

Infrared is part of the invisible light spectrum and provides heat energy. When separated from UV light, infrared in non-ionising, a safe form of radiation that can improve overall health.

Benefits of infrared include improved circulation, reduced inflammation, lower blood pressure, wound healing, increased metabolism, weight loss and detoxification.

Infrared may also help to improve sleep and reduce stress. When combined with chromotherapy (coloured light therapy) additional benefits may be conferred.

Chromotherapy harnesses the power of visible light. Where benefits may also include reduced swelling and pain (joint and back pain), increased wound healing and recovery, anti-ageing benefits, mood regulation and assistance with sleep.

+ ARE INFRARED SAUNAS SAFE?

+ how long should i sauna for?

The tolerability of infrared saunas varies between individuals and can be effected by multiple factors including:

  • medical conditions
  • age
  • fatigue
  • hydration
  • gender 
  • genetic differences in heat tolerance
  • weight 
  • intrinsic endocrine function
  • detoxification pathways
  • toxin exposure (cigarette smoke, chemicals etc)

If you are infrared sauna-ing for the first time we recommend a 45 minute time slot consisting of 15-20 mins of noncontinuous heat exposure (no greater than 5-10 minutes at a time). However if you are seasoned sauna-er longer periods may be tolerable with a recommended session duration of 20-45 minutes.

Some people use heart rate monitoring to gauge tolerance where an increase in heart rate is normal with heat exposure. However an excessively high heart rate (> 120 bpm) or an irregular heart rate can indicate too much systemic stress. Other signs of intolerance may include dizziness, excessive fatigue, mental confusion or haze, visual floaters, excessively high or low blood pressure, difficulty breathing and/or chest pain. Should you experience any of these signs will using the sauna please ensure you exit the sauna, rest, seek to cool your body down in the shower onsite, rehydrate and notify our artisans. In emergency situations immediate medical attention should be sought by dialling 000.

Following a sauna you should not have an increase in health condition symptoms or feel poorly the following day.

+ how OFTEN SHOULD I SAUNA?

Saunas are safe to use daily for up to 20 minutes continuously, however it is important to ensure adequate rehydration and nutritional support (including salts replacement).

For optimal results at least one session weekly is recommended.

+ AM I SUITABLE FOR INFRARED SAUNA?

Most people are suitable for infrared heat exposure, however medical clearance is required for the following medical conditions:

  • Anyone taking regular medications especially heart rate and blood pressure modifying agents, photosensitising drugs, barbituates, parkinsonian drugs and diuretics
  • Anyone over the age of 50
  • Cardiovascular conditions including hypo or hyper tension, congestive heart failure, ischaemic heart disease
  • Photosensitising (light sensitive conditions) e.g. Systemic lupus erythematous
  • Obesity
  • Chronic conditions including diabetes with neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, central nervous system tumours, parkinson's disease
  • Recent (within the last 72 hours) soft tissue injury
  • Implants, rods, pins or artificial joints

Sauna use is CONTRAINDICATED in the following people:

  • Pregnant mothers
  • Haemophiliacs
  • Concurrent illness and/or fever
  • Post surgery
  • Intoxication with drugs or alcohol
  • Insensitivity to heat
  • Postural hypotension

+ WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INFRARED SAUNA?

Far infrared saunas are generally safe, however can cause side effects alongside various medical conditions:

- recent cardiovascular event with or high predisposing history
- physiological stress which may exacerbate chronic conditions, pregnancy complications and/or acute illness that are similarly effected by exercise
- lower heat tolerance due to nutrient depletion or illness
- hypoglycaemia, diabetics should use caution when sauna-ing
- chronic fatigue may be exacerbated by frequent sauna use
- volume depletion due to intensive sweating when rehydration is not attended or low fluid volume is preexisting


+ What should i expect during my first sauna session?

In the first 10-20 minutes the infrared heat will start to stimulate the various systems in your body and some may start to sweat profusely. Some will sweat more readily than others and some may not start sweating for the first 15-20 minutes. It is normal during this time to feel hot and for your heart rate to slightly increase.

The recommended session time is 25-35 minutes Some people may tolerate more or less time depending on their preference and overall health. Starting with a shorter session and slowly increasing exposure may be recommended if you have conditions to warrant this.

+ What if i feel unwell while using the sauna?

In the event that you feel unwell while using the sauna please seek medical advice and notify our staff.

Further you should slowly stand up and remove yourself from the sauna, cool yourself down in the shower onsite, rehydrate and have something to eat.

If you are experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or palpitations please call OOO or use the emergency notification onsite. 

+ Do you have a shower?

Yes, use of our waterfall Banya bucket shower is included with all sauna use.

Please note towels are only provided for use during business hours.

+ CAN i bring a friend?

Yes, bringing a friend to your session is encouraged, particularly if it is your first time or you are working up to sauna-ing.

However please note that all guests are bound by the same terms and conditions and are required to complete our medical questionnaire prior to entering the sauna. 

Guests are able to attend at an additional fee as denoted via the booking portal.

+ Can children use the sauna?

Use of the sauna by children under 16 years of age is not permitted. 

+ can i use the sauna if i am pregnant?

Due to the increased physiological stress on the body at elevated temperatures, our sauna is not available for use by pregnant women.

+ What should i wear in the sauna?

Clothing MUST BE WORN in the sauna at all times. 

As a minimum underwear is required.

+ Do I need to bring anything?

For Solace experiences occurring within business hours towels, water and shower amenities are provided.

If you are making a sauna booking outside of hours, you will need to bring your own towel and water. 

Towels in the sauna are COMPULSARY.

+ can i add a sauna to my solace experience?

+ Can i do yoga in the sauna?

Yes! Our sauna is big enough to enable yoga poses.

An ipad is available with all 60 minute yoga bookings if you do not wish to do your own guided session. 

Although our yoga session is 60 minutes, self-directed yoga is still possible when shorter sessions are booked.

Colour light therapy (chromotherapy) is a method of treatment that uses the visible wavelengths of the colour light spectrum and relies on the premise that each colour is associated with a different biochemical response at the cellular level. Our Clearlight sauna offers a full spectrum of chromotherapy options to boost the benefits of your sauna experience. 


WHAT ABOUT CHROMOTHERAPY?

ORANGE - light is said to have a liberating action upon the mind and ameliorate repression. As a combination of red and yellow light it combines physical energy with mental clarity inducing a transformation between lower physical reactions and higher mental responses. Orange light help to assimilate new ideas and is an emotional stimulant that may help to remove inhibitions and promote independent social behaviour. Orange light brings joy and increases the thirst for life while potentially helping to reduce inflammation.

PURPLE - light is believed to provide nourishment to the cells in the upper brain, purifying thoughts and feelings. Violet energy connects us to our spiritual self guidance, wisdom and inner strength to fortify artistic strength and creativity while also assisting with diseases of the scalp, neurosis and cramps. 

YELLOW - light is known to induce collagenesis and awaken mental inspiration. By fuelling the solar plexus yellow light can alleviate nerve-related conditions and gut disorders. Yellow light has an alkalising effects which strengthens nerves within the cerebrum to inspire, awaken and stimulate the mind, as well as increase awareness, clarity and understanding.

BLUE - light may reduce the activity of the sebaceous glands and is also absorbed by P acnes bacteria. Blue light may help in the treatment of acne and help to expedite healing of third degree burns. It is also mentally relaxing and is thought to connect us to holistic thought and gives wisdom and clarity to enhance communication and speech. Soothing blue light brings calm and peace to a mind that is worried, excited or in a consistently nervous state.

RED - light is thought to stimulate fibroblasts (cells that produce collagen), increase haemoglobin, promote cellular growth and improve circulation. It may therefore increase healing, and hydration to ameliorate ageing while also reducing inflammation and treating inflammatory skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and dermatitis). As the 'great energiser' red light has also been linked to hair growth promoting benefits, potentially by improving the health of tissue and aiding blood flow and may also help to stimulate metabolism while improving pain and promoting muscle recovery. 


GREEN - light is the universal healer and may help to reduce the activity of melanocytes (pigment producing cells) thereby reducing the appearance of brown spots/freckles. It may also promote release of serotonin with positive effects on depression, hunger and appetite. In addition to positively influencing weight, green light cleanses and balances energy to give a feeling of renewal, peace and harmony. 

INFRARED - light works similarly to red light, though is proposed to have the ability to penetrate deeper into tissue and influence lymphatic drainage. Thought to stimulate energy production in cells, IR may expedite recovery from swelling, bruising and inflammation.

LED is a treatment option, that is suitable for all skin types and most skin conditions. There is no preparation involved and rarely any downtime.
